The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) is an organisation of people interested in the promotion and protection of breastfeeding. The Association is supported by health authorities and specialists in infant and child health and nutrition, including a panel of distinguished honorary advisers. ABA is recognised internationally as a source of accurate information about breastfeeding management and research. The Australian Government's National Breastfeeding Strategy takes a multi-faceted approach covering family education, employer support, health professional education, indigenous health, data collection, antenatal educators and the Advisory panel on the marketing in Australia of infant formula (se APMAIF below). Includes links to Check on Breastfeeding and other resources developed through this Strategy. Infant Feeding Guidelines for Health Workers (part of Food for Health) www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/dietsyn.htm The NHMRC Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults and Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents in Australia incorporating the Infant Feeding Guidelines for Health Workers are based on the best available scientific evidence and provide information for health professionals and the general population about healthy food choices. International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE)
The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) was established to develop and administer the certification examination for lactation consultants. The IBLCE examination is the premier, internationally recognised measure of competence in lactation consulting. Candidates who pass the IBLCE examination attain the designation IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is an
international project that aims to give every baby the best start in life by
creating a health care environment where breastfeeding is the norm and practices
known to promote the health and well-being of all babies and their mothers are
followed. The BFHI Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are the global standard
by which hospitals are assessed and accredited. A 'Baby Friendly' hospital is
one where mothers' informed choice of feeding is supported, respected and
encouraged. World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA)
WABA is a global network of organizations and individuals who believe breastfeeding is the right of all children and mothers and who dedicate themselves to protect, promote and support this right. WABA acts on the Innocenti Declaration and works in liaison with UNICEF. Cochrane Library www.nicsl.com.au/cochrane/index.asp The Cochrane Library brings together in
one place research which looks at the effectiveness of different health care
treatments and interventions. It is recognised as the best single source of
information on the effects of health care. Advisory Panel on the Marketing in Australia of Infant Formula (APMAIF) www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/Content/health-pubhlth-strateg-foodpolicy-apmaif.htm The Advisory Panel on the Marketing in Australia of Infant Formula (APMAIF) was established to monitor compliance with and advise the Government on the Marketing in Australia of Infant Formula: Manufacturers and Importers (MAIF) Agreement. World Health Organization (WHO) The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency for health. WHO's objective, as set out in its Constitution, is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined in WHO's Constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. ILCA’s mission is to advance the lactation consultant profession through leadership, advocacy, professional development, and research. Network of Australian Lactation
Colleges (NALC)
The Network of Australian Lactation Colleges is committed to protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, fostering lactation education for health professionals, encouraging research in lactation, and providing mutual support and encouragement to lactation consultants and other health professionals in the field of lactation. Please visit their website for information about the State Colleges that make up this Network. Each state college operates independently but collaborates with other state colleges through the Network of Australian Lactation Colleges (NALC). You do not have to be an IBCLC to join. The Australian Lactation Consultants Association (ALCA) The Australian Lactation Consultants Association aims to work for the promotion, support and education of breastfeeding, for health professionals, counsellors, parents and the general public. One of our primary roles is to support our members, and all Lactation Consultants, in furthering their work with mothers and their babies. Any IBCLC can apply to become an ALCA member and thus gain the benefits of reduced conference fees, political lobbying, access to affordable professional indemnity and rebates with some private health funds, to name but a few.
