The aim of this course is to expand existing knowledge through a self-directed learning process, while providing support for those involved in caring for the breastfeeding mother and her family. This course is suitable for all health professionals involved in providing breastfeeding support.


This course can be done entirely from home, allowing for flexibility and providing adaptability to the needs and commitments of the individual.

Course content

The course consists of a series of 10 modules covering all key areas of breastfeeding and lactation knowledge and management:

  1. Early days to 12 months
  2. Anatomy & Physiology
  3. Sociology, Psychology & Counselling
  4. Endocrinology & Biochemistry
  5. Pregnancy, Birth & Nutrition
  6. Immunology & Pathology
  7. Pharmacology & Toxicology
  8. Prematurity / Technology
  9. Public Health/ Ethical & Legal issues
  10. Research

Note: A number of students around Australia are completing this course as part of a Bachelor, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters Degree.

If you wish to do this, you need to meet the following criteria:

Modules will be graded – Distinction, Credit, Pass, Fail

Nominated written work (sent via post or email) will be assessed by IBCLCs. Registrants will be given a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grade for each module. If work is deemed unsatisfactory, registrants may resubmit that component of their work.


A Certificate of Completion will be issued on satisfactory completion of this course. This does not mean you are a lactation consultant. To become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant you will need to sit the IBLCE (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) exam.

Registrations for the course will be accepted at any time during the year. Students have 7 months from receipt of package in which to complete the course.

Group registrations of 10 or more from the same area will receive a library of texts (worth over $300) to use and keep.
